Dear Dr. Deitz:

MODIFIED BLOCK STYLE LETTER

This letter is an example of the modified block style. It is one of the most popular business letter styles in use today. As you will observe, it differs from the block style in that the dateline and the closing lines are indented and blocked. Mixesd punctuation is frequently useeed with this letter style: a colon after the salutation and a comma after the complimentary close.

When the modified block style is used, letter production can efficiency dictates that the dateline, the complimentary close, and the typed name and title be started at the same point. Actual practice in the business office, however, varies widely. For instance the dateline may be centered; itmay be typed so that it ends at the right margin; or it may be given special placement in relation to the letterhead. Similarly, the closing lines may be started five spaces to the left of center or may be typed so that they end approximately at the right margin.

Other questions about letter placement are covered in the letter styloe booklet which is enclosed with this letter. Don't hesitate to write to us if there is any other information you need.

Sincerely,

Susan Hunter
